A Delicate Balance: Workers vs. Visitors
Living in Fort Myers Beach, especially after the hurricane, is a unique experience that outsiders often cannot fully grasp. The delicate balance between workers and visitors has always been a cornerstone of our community, and the effects of the hurricane have tested this balance to its limits.
Insurance Woes: The Unnamed Wind Insurance Company
Before the hurricane, Fort Myers Beach was home to around 7,000 full-time residents. Adding to the complexity of this situation, a certain wind insurance company, which will remain unnamed here, was deregulated by the state of Florida less than 30 days before the hurricane hit. As a result, many wind claims were left unpaid, leaving those who had diligently paid for insurance in a precarious position. Business owners returning to Fort Myers Beach had to secure loans to revive their services, contributing to the slow and arduous process of recovery. This also means many LESS people to help recover the community to ensure that visitors can return to enjoy their time here.
The Town’s Struggle: Rebuilding from Scratch
When disaster struck, in the aftermath of the hurricane, the number of full-time residents plummeted to a mere 300 people. These remaining individuals, many of whom were displaced in some way, faced the enormous challenge of rebuilding their lives and our community. The people who are here work endlessly to maintaining the charm and functionality of our beloved island. It is absolutely taking more TIME to recover.
A Personal Note: My Commitment to Honest Updates
Even the town itself was not spared. The property where our town once stood was completely devastated, necessitating a relocation to meet the community’s restructuring needs.
For those who know me personally or follow my updates, you understand that I don’t publish information lightly. My Facebook page, [LeanisFMB](https://www.facebook.com/LeanisFMB/), documented my initial response to the hurricane. I had no real authority, but I felt compelled to advise against returning immediately, explaining the dire circumstances – no power, no elevators, and no services.
Now, with that same commitment to honesty, I can tell you: the lease is signed, and we are making our comeback. I will be sharing updates on my business activities and those of others at Santini Plaza. We are dedicated to serving you again!
Currently, landscaping work is underway at the plaza. While I haven’t posted photos yet, rest assured, they are coming. The construction fence is still up, but I promise, we are coming back!
Looking Forward: The Rebirth of Santini Plaza
Patience is a virtue often tested in these challenging times, but the end of this wait is in sight. Santini Plaza will rise again, and with it, the spirit of Fort Myers Beach.
Stay tuned for more updates, and thank you for your unwavering support and patience. We look forward to welcoming you back to a rejuvenated Santini Plaza with a current target date of sometime in October 2024.
