A Symbol of Resilience
Everyone on Fort Myers Beach has a story about loss — about something they loved that changed forever after a storm, a tragedy, or simply time itself. For some, it was a home. For others, a way of life. But for all of us, it’s the same truth: we rebuild because our love for this island runs deeper than the destruction left behind.
For me, that story starts long before Hurricane Ian — back in the year 2000, when my mom and I took a road trip from Michigan to Florida to pick up a 1972 GMC truck for my husband. She named it Old Henry, and every time we turned the key, she’d talk to it like an old friend, hoping it would start and carry us safely on the 1,200-mile journey home.
We stopped at every little antique mall along I-75, laughed, explored, and crossed Alligator Alley where my mom — in true mom fashion — counted 82 alligators as we drove. It was one of those rare trips where time slows down and the memories stay forever.
Now, 19 years after my mom’s passing, Old Henry has made his way back home — this time to Fort Myers Beach. Fully restored by my talented husband, the same man who helped bring Leani’s back to life after the storm — as close as possible to what was lost. When I slide behind that wheel, I can feel her beside me again — the same way I feel the spirit of Fort Myers Beach beside me every day.
Old Henry isn’t just a truck, he’s a reminder of what it means to endure — to weather storms and keep going. He represents the same spirit that has carries many people who Estero Island and Ft Myers Beach calls to. That island spirit has carried Leani’s spirit since 1977 through recessions, hurricanes, and the unimaginable loss of Hurricane Ian. This little island boutique survived when so much was gone — not because it was easy, but because Fort Myers Beach doesn’t give up.
We rebuild not just to sell clothes or reopen doors — we rebuild to keep memories alive, to honor the past, and to prove that love and community are stronger than any storm.
So when you see “Old Henry” remember its another symbol of faith, family, and the kind of resilience that keeps this Fort Myers Beach alive and being the special place it is! 💙
